Living in Jyväskylä,Finland. I'm an artist, a writer, and a father.
I also work in a funky little bar.
I enjoyed the article, Willie. To me, it's a no-brainer that people should learn Finnish if they're in Finland for any length of time. Apart from the practical arguments you give, learning languages is one of the most enriching, humanising things anyone can do. I just spent 26 days in Jyväskylä on a writing scholarship. I had so much work to do in a short time I couldn't pick up much. At the start of my few weeks I spent a lot of time saying, 'I'm sorry, I don't speak Finnish.' Pretty soon the comma in that sentence disappeared; it's a genuine matter of regret.
