First eating-size fish of the year

I caught a couple of tiny trout a few weeks ago casting lures in a stream, but this is my first official caught while trolling fish this season.

This is a kuha (zander or pike perch, Sander lucioperca). This fish weighed in at 1.4 kilos (about 3 lbs) and fed four adults (with new potatoes and fresh baby greens). The zander is a close relative of the walleye (Sander vitreus). I caught this fish a few days ago. The following day I landed 2 small trout which I released and a kuha that weighed just shy of 1 kilo which I filleted and froze.

  1. WOW, the fish looks a little scray. I've never seen any like it! Maybe because on the plate they look a little different... :)
